For early adopters, Mac OS X 10.6 can be pre-ordered and will be delivered on 8/28. :)

Should be a good upgrade and starts the trend to smaller OSs. Apparently Windows 7 is along the same lines.

I wonder if Snow Leopard will be available for the G5 processor?? (Just checked and the answer is no so this is a milestone and the move to Intel is now complete).

You are right, only Intel processors are supported, this is the reason why it is 7GB smaller than the current OS.

I think it's more than that Axel- the Universal program files on DVD were bigger but only Intel or Motorola versions would be installed as appropriate so little difference in size once installed. I've read that Apple is moving more towards running their current OS in small devices, as they do now with the iPhone and iPod Touch, so they need a more efficient OS with a small footprint. Microsoft have miraculously figured out the same thing in going from the behemoth that is Vista to the leaner Windows 7.

That could be right. A few weeks ago they said it would free up 6GB, today they say up to 7GB.

I installed Snow Leopard on two computers and both work fine, including PS CS3 and Viveza.

Good to know Axel. I would expect quite a speed increase as the system is running in full 64-bit mode now.

Alex, thanks for the headsup. Does your x-rite eye one display calibrator work with SL? Thx, JR

Has anyone with NX2 upgraded to SL? I ask because the compatibility chart I looked at says Nikon software. compatibility is unknown.

One note if you use parallels 3.0 or earlier, may want to back up programs you use there. I use Birders Diary for my lifelist. On the chance that it does not roll forward, I've backed up and moved data, etc. to my iDisc on the cloud. Glad to hear no issue with CS3.

    On Nikon Cafe, someone says:
Not looking good for either Capture NX 2.2.2 or View NX 1.4.0 on Snow Leopard - Capture NX wont open any of my D3 Raw files and View NX would appear to be a debug version with all menus and menu options in upper case and prepended with IDS - eg IDS_TOOLBAR_TITLE_TRANSFER is the first menu in View NX. Also View NX wont quit, must use Force Quit. All in all a bit of a mess

I just tried, the application starts fine. It's one of the few written for PPC and you have to customize the installation and install Rosetta to avoid issues with those relatively old applications.

I have a SSD hard drive in my MacBook Pro and it can't hardly get any faster, PS takes only a bit over 2 seconds to load. On my iMac I see the difference, it feels faster.

Thanks Alex for the feedback re the X-rite on SL.

Do you see any speed improvements on your MBP in Raw conversions for instance? Such or similar processes should eliminate the advantage of a SSD and reflect the (potential) benefits of the 64 bit SL as far as I know. My guess though is that the speed benefit is only realized if also the applications run in 64 bit.

I hardly ever use the MBP for image processing but will see if it is faster on the iMac. Since PS for Mac is not a 64-bit application (neither CS3 nor CS4) the speed boost is probably insignificant.

supposedly the new upgrade (I've not installed mine yet) will cause problems with Adobe CS 3. Not sure about how it will work with older CS 2 (which I have in addition to CS 4 for the sole purpose of certain plug ins I use).

Let us know how the programs are functioning.

I just worked with Bridge, ACR and PS CS3 and didn't run into any problems. On the contrary, on my iMac these programs seem to run a bit faster. Adobe said they would not support CS3 under Snow Leopard, after getting a lot of bad press they back-tracked.

The only issue I have encountered so far is that Firefox 3.5.2 and Safari 4.0.3 produce different saturation but only on the iMac, not on the MacBook Pro even after recalibrating. Colors in FF look somewhat oversaturated, which I find surprising since both browsers are color-managed. Colors in Safari and PS look pretty much identical. If memory serves right, FF and Safari colors looked very similar in Leopard, go figure.

I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro yesterday. Quite painless. First I upgraded my graphics card in order to take advantage of OpenCL. Then I installed Snow Leopard on a clean hard drive. Next I imported my apps, settings, photos, and documents from my original boot drive. Snow Leopard feels faster than Leopard. Photoshop CS4 no longer has an annoying glitch; when I am working on an image in PS and switch to another space on my Mac, when I subsequently return to PS I can now see the image I was working on. In Leopard when you returned to the PS space, you could see PS menus but not your image. I like the expanded functionality of stacks; you can now dig deeper into subfolders.

A couple of hiccups. The Spyder2 Express monitor calibration software requires Rosetta to be installed, and it won't transfer calibration settings to my video card. The Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse software is not yet 64 bit. But that's about it.

    Next up my laptop.

I have X-Rite Eye-One Match and had to install Rosetta, too. Good luck with your laptop.

Update #1: I can't seem to print with my Epson 2880. The Epson website says they are working on drivers for Snow Leopard. Reinstalling the old drivers didn't help. I get very limited menu options. Photoshop sends the file to the printer, but the file vanishes from the print que and nothing happens.

Have you tried to install the additional printer drivers Apple released?

Here is the link for Epson drivers: http://support.apple.com/downloads/E...Mac_OS_X_v10_6

Update #2: I got the printer working by removing it from my printer list and then adding it again. The Apple-supplied drivers work fine.

Update #3: I got the monitor calibration software working. For you Lightroom 2 users on the Mac platform, make sure you're running in 64 bit. Find Lightroom in Finder. Right click on the icon and select Get Info. In the General tab, make sure Open in 32-bit mode is deselected.

    From Nikon website:
Initial testing of Nikon software with Apple's new "Snow Leopard" Mac OS 10.6 indicates that there are incompatibilites with Nikon Capture NX 2, Nikon View NX and Nikon Scan, users of these applications should not upgrade their OS at this time. When more compatibility information is available it will be posted on the Nikon web site.

Yes I had to install Rosetta to get the calibration software to work.

Doug, when do you get to chose Rosetta? I bought SL from Apple by mail and started to install it on a backup drive. I saw no choices. My dvd was bad - I had to return it to Apple yesterday. I am just saying I did not see an option for Rosetta. Do you get this after you install a basic SL?

Allan, before the installation starts, on one of the screens there is a "customize" button in the lower left where you can select Rosetta.

My dvd must have stopped working before I got to that screen. I should have a new dvd by Monday.

I got the Rosetta dialog when I tried to run the calibration software. A dialog came up saying I needed to install Rosetta, and gave me an option to do the install.

Online report suggests Snow Leopard upgrade fine as long as NX2 has been upgraded to 2.2.2 before upgrading the OS. SL installed then NX2 upgraded things don't work so well.

I have a new copy of the dvd but decided to wait. I am worried about calibration software, NX, scanner software, and MS Office 2004.

Tony, some people still are having trouble even though most agree with you.

They have released a number of new printer drivers and the first update for the OS 10.6.1. I don't know if it addresses the issues you mentioned. My calibration software works fine, BTW.

I will wait a bit and then just take the plunge. I usually update fairly soon (I have a D300S now instead of a D300) but have no complaints on 10.5.8.
