Here is another photo of the same fluffed-up great blue heron from two days ago. This time I got him coming directly at me, and from pretty close up, too. It ain't a real pretty sight, but is a pose I don't see often (actually "unfluffed", which happened soon after, he was a very pretty bird). Cropped and tweaked. C&C, please.

Hi Wendell - is this his Super Hero Pose ??? - Like it :)
Think I would crop vertical here getting rid of some of the negative space either side. Head/Eye isn't as sharp as the neck area - maybe some more DOF or check were your focus point was - the whites on the head are up there but not over.
Did you selectively sharpen the bird??? some of the foreground looks quite sharp.
    Keep em coming :)

    Hi Wendell,
I like the direct contact pose, I too would try a vertical crop, and agree with Mr. Peters good advise...looking forward to more...

Very interesting pose. Makes him look almost human :D Fully agree with suggestions. Looks to me like there might be a bit of a blue cast as well.

Was going to say also a bit of a blue cast. Nice behaviour capture Wendell. A bit more of a head turn would have made it ideal I think. Like Lance's idea of a vertical.

Hi wendall..........Hilarious pose....I agree a turn of the head would help and selectively sharpen just the bird...and let the rest go soft. ......a vertical crop would eliminate a lot of unnnecssary space.

Thanks, everyone, for your critiques -- I agree with them all. I learn something with almost every post, and in many cases wonder why i did not see the problems before I posted. Learning the "why" of this bird's fluffing practice is an added bonus, Alfred. I had tried to find out about it on the Web but came up with reasons like the bird is cold, etc., which I knew could not have been the case on this warm Southern California morning.

Wendell ... interesting it does not work for white birds but the GBH white morph does the behavior since he does not know !!!
