Default Canon Announces New G11 PowerShot

    Read about it here.

Figures, they'd do this months after I bought a G10.

it seems they cut down on the megapixels in favor of cleaner images. smart move

Yeah I agree...I am having a blast with the G10 on a long weekend in Montreal--I feel like I forgot something as it is the only camera I have with me...

I did find something out about the G10 which ticked me off. If you use it on a tripod with the bubble level in the flash socket, it thinks there is a flash attached and will not let you Autobracket for HDR. Likewise, the internal flash will not work with a bubble level on either. So remove it after checking balance and then shoot.

I got the RRS l-bracket for it (hope it works on the g11 too)

I hope the next version of 50D (60D or whatever) would also have fewer pixels and better IQ, like my old trusty 40D. I am fed up with NR in 50D!!! Canon has finally done the math :)

    WoW for underwater photographers!!

    12,800 ISO!

Imagine if some of this cleaner technology finds it's way into the 60D or the 1D4!!

Artie, you talked about a G10 for the next Galapagos trip - this is a much better UW unit.

I just ordered the UW housing from Adorama and I am waiting for them to receive the G11 - come onnnnnnn 1D4!

It's very encouraging to me that Canon dropped the number of megapixels in its flagship P&S from 15 to 10. Could it be that the megapixel war is over?

The drop makes sense, going form 10 to 15 didn't do much for quality but raised the noise.

Will be hanging on to my G10 The greatest asset IMO is the wide 28 lens !!

I have to say that I'm probably even more excited about the new S90 by Canon. It's got many of the same features as the G11 but is more pocketable and costs less.

    Jay,
There is no cleaner technology, except to increase quantum efficiency of the sensor, and that can only be done by about a factor of two. The dominant performance metric with digital cameras is pixel size and number of pixels. To get both you need a larger sensor.

For example, the G10 has 1.72 micron pixel spacing and the G11 has 2.08 micron spacing. Compare that to your 5D Mark II with 6.4 micron spacing, or a 50D with 4.7 micron spacing. Light collection goes by the area, so lets look at the areas:

    G10: 3.0 square microns, G11: 4.2. 50D: 22, 5DII: 41 sq. microns.

Now let's normalize to the G11 = 1.0 in relative pixel area:

    G10= 0.7, G11= 1.0, 50D= 5.2, 5DII= 9.8.

What this means is that if you shoot the G11 at ISO 12800, you would get the same signal-to-noise ratios if you shot the other cameras at:

    G10: 9090, 50D: 66,500, 5DII: 125,000!

So any vendor that says they have some new spectacular low noise camera is not telling you everything. Basic physics tells the real story, not the marketing department. So ISO 12,800 on the G11 will be worth as much as ISO 125,000 on your 5DII.

Sorry Jay, it won't do 12,800, I looked at the sensor data here http://www.sony.net/Products/SC-HP/c.../icx685cqz.pdf it is better than G10 but no miracles, tiny pixels and much noisier than a DSLR, yet a move in the right direction for Canon :)

I would absolutely agree with you IF it had a view finder; you have caused me to think about it and make further inquiries of the UW photo shop in San Diego that my brother frequents.
