    Default Heron rookery behavior shot

This is taken at Peone Prairie, a wetlands north of Spokane WA. I have observed this rookery for the past 3 years. This is a 50% crop from a 50D, with 500f4+1.4X. Obviously I am not real close. There is a slough between me and the birds, so closer is not possible, and in any event, would probably disturb them.

I have a sequence with the adult flying in, landing, bill touching (2 of those) then the juvenile standing next to the nest in flight position, but not yet ready. There was no food transfer.

Hoping for comments on the image presentation etc. Also like to hear an explanation of the behavior.

Shot at f5.6, ISO400, 1/1600 burst mode AI servo. (BIF settings)

Don't know about the behavior. Nice light, BG, interaction, and exposure control. Plenty sharp. I would run some NR on the BG, and desaturate the sky some.

Nice behavioral shot, in general angle is somewhat steep and one of the herons is looking away from you, but you had no choice. Agree on the noise you need to run more NR.

Thanks for feedback. That 50D at ISO400 and 50% crop is noisy. I ran Neat Image the first thing after opening, but it needed more.

Here is one with the sky desaturated and another round of NR.

Nice action and I like the colors of the birds and vegetation. These birds that I have photographed are unpredictable and do just about anythig at any time. I like the image and think a desat of the sky would help the birds greatly. Nicely done Ben.

I like the interaction between the two, with both showing good eye contact. Your repost is much better, but I would still try and selectively sharpen the heron on the left, especially on the head and neck.
