I have used Drobo for the last year as my primary image storage device. It replaced four external hard drives. Its very simple to use and will tell you if any of the drives are failing so you can replace them without losing any data. I still back it up once a month onto another external hard drive that I keep off sit.

I have 4 1 TB drives in my Drobo, and I'm a very satisfied customer.

I also have a Drobo with 3 1TB drives. I use it as my main archive drive. The only issue I have had with it was recently when we suffered a power outage. It would not remount initially even after warm and cold reboots. Eventually after unplugging and taking out the 3 drives and then replacing them it came back online. One drive was said to have failed although in reality it had not. It took 9 hours to rebuild, although that said, it has all come back and no data has been lost.

Research during this problem seems to point towards the Drobo not performing well if not properly unmounted, as in a power failure. I have since bought an UPS system to prevent the power outage problem reoccurring.

    I am much happier now.

I have a recently acquired DROBO with 3x500GB HDDs.

The only complaint I have is that the latest DROBO dashboard icon in the system tray always shows incorrect capacity. Other than that, no issues.

I would NEVER use it for primary storage though; too slow, even with FW800. I wish they had an E-SATA option. I am sure they will in the near future.

I really appreciate all of your feedback as I am now on the fence between the Drobo and LaCie 2TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive. I am aware of some of the minor issues with Drobo however it sounds like good system. For the same money I can buy the LaCie Quada and add a 2TB internal hard drive into my work station. UHH decisions, decisions.

I have two 4 tb drobos connected with firewire 800. One is my time machine backup and one is a backup to my main drives. So far they have worked flawlessly.

    Art,
I thought I saw you wearing a Drobo hat in the Galapagos but failed to ask you about that. Cheers,
    David
