Default India birds: White Naped Flameback

This is a shot of the white naped flameback taken in Bandhavgarh National Park. Flamebacks are woodpeckers and are common through out the country. Most of these are the regular flamebacks which do not have the white nape that this specimen has.

I too thought it was a flameback when I shot this photo (I am a photographer first and birder next ;). My friend Vivek Tiwari (who is an avid birder) corrected me when we were reviewing these together.

Lighting was not ideal due to the fact that this was early afternoon.

    C & C is always welcome.

Hi Vivek. Nice profile of a beautiful woodpecker. I like the way the eye is illuminated by sunlight. I would go for a tighter crop and I would darken the BG a little, in particular the bright spot underneath the beak.

HA is almost good for the police folks in the HAP. I do find the large bright spots in the BG a bit distracting and darkening is a good suggestion. Tighter for me too please. Just too much space for good impact IMHO. :) Thanks for sharing Vivek.

Here is the cropped one Doug...

How do you darken the spot? I tried layer masks to darken that one spot, but it does not seem to be working well.

    Akos,

Thanks for the comments; tighter crop posted above.

BTW, what is HA and HAP ;)... Not too much into acronyms you know...

    Hi Vivek,
Thanks for the PM buddy. :)

This looks far better tightly presented. The only other info you should add is the camera and lens to the exif data, that makes comments even fairer I suppose and more relevant. :)

To answer your question about the acronyms, you ought to check out this thread, as it has a good collection of the ones the members here use pretty regularly. HAP means Head Angle Police and is led by the notorious :D Arthur Morris (just kidding Maestro M.) who will clearly tell you (gently of course as per BPN credo) if your HA or Head Angle is off by even 0.75 degrees from ideal. And rightly so, after all he and we (fellow members) all want everyone to be the best they can be. So you now know! :)

Thanks for all the information including the Acro thread.

Camera was 1DIII, Lens used was 300/2.8 IS with 1.4X (I think)

    Regards
