    Default Assignment - Macro

I took this image at Longwood Gardens in PA. The Cacti were backlit by outside light on a very cloudy/rainy day. Canon EOS 40D, 70-200mm at 145mm with 24mm extension tube, ISO 100, f/3.5. 1/250. fill flash -2 1/3 with diffuser. I question if this is actually considered a macro or just a close up but I will call it a macro until told otherwise.

great idea. i like the framing. i think if you had selected the foreground thorns on the cactus, it would be even better. with only the fringes being in focus, there is no where for my eye to go. kinda gets lost in the frame.

Hi Nick - agree with MR H - no point of focus as such - nothing that immediately grabs your eye and then lets it wander around the rest of the image.
    Keep em coming :)

    Hi Nick,
I agree with the fine advise given...for your next one like this one, try stopping your lens down to an f/8 or f/11 to get the foreground in focus...looking forward to your next one...

Hi Nick. Nice composition and exposure. Good work with the fill flash! I have some cacti like this and have been thinking about making that shot. Does look cool! Would love to see the shot again with the aforementioned DOF.

Nick, nice use of light, reducing FEC.

Hi Nick, You have a nice comp but feel it would have been stronger with the foreground cactus sharp with the backround muted as shown.

Hi all, Interesting and unexpected comments. The focus point is about 1 o'clock on the front cactus, I was going for the fuzziness on the cactus. But now that you all mention it...I need to go back there and try you suggestions as I think it would look great. Unfortunately it was so humid in there that day that 1 or 2 images after this one my camera went belly up..err 99... ends up it was just moisture and 24 hours it was fine...When are we going back Dave???? Regarding the flash diffuser, I used a flash diffuser cover and I just kept kept changing the Flash EC until I felt the light was soft enough and the histogram looked good. That's where it ended up. My initial images without the cover were too harsh even at -2 1/3. Thanks for everyone's suggestions, greatly appreciated!

Thanks, I was not sure you were talking about the flash cover when you mentioned diffuser, now I understand. The light fill captured the fuzziness and the 1/250 shutter was within the hi-synch range I assume - well done.
