    Default Coot with Chick

    1D2n, 600mm f4 is x1.4, 1/800s, f8, iso 200. Cloned some mucus from chick's bill.

I'm still concentrating on my local pond at present, because I can get there quickly if conditions are promising (which isn't too often recently!). I have a cropping dilemma with this one. I will try to add a vertical crop for consideration - it this is not considered good etiquette on the forum, please let me know. All comments are appreciated.

Vertical composition - can't decide which I prefer!

The vertical crop is better in my opinion, it gives a greater feel of intimacy.

a great silk feeling image with superb tone and gr8 sharpness.

Tough choice on the two different compositions. They both have very strong points. I personally prefer the vertical crop. It lends a better sense of the interaction between the two. Another great image with your patented low angle and killer water.

Nice intimacy, but I do wish for better HA from both adult and chick, whose face is in part shadow from the angle of the light. Better HAs would really put this already stunning capture over the top. I would also try a pano crop as an alternative. Thanks for sharing. :)

An incredibly good photo, Ian. With a photo that shows interaction between two birds suchas this one I think it's best that they are looking at each other as you show here. To have direct eye contact with the viewer from both birds in this case would mean that you interrupted their action. I also really like the low angle that you get with these photos. Great interaction.

    Excellent colors and lovely bg.
I like the first posted horizontal image, but maybe crop a little off the bottom.
    Beautiful scene.

I respectfully disagree. So are you saying if the heads were angled towards the photographer and the action would still be the same then there would be interruption? I seriously doubt it. :) The image would have been more powerful in that case and the chick's head would have received better light. :) If this is a local pond, the birds would not have been that perturbed by Ian's presence and the heads would not always be angled away from the him. It's all in the timing, and while in this instance the intimacy is beautiful, the HA are not quite right for the purpose of image design and perhaps there was no opportunity to capture a better HA.

I like the first one too, love the angle and calm water, seems a touch dark to me.

Fascinating debate and very informative! I certainly did have to lighten the chick's head a little, so it would have been better if the birds had been in a different part of the pond when the interaction occured. I agree it's all in the timing and much of that comes down to luck. As has been pointed out before, the more you try, the luckier you get. However, I will certainly be going back over the years and now I have a new challenge!

I prefer the OP, as one sees more of the chick. Akos's sugestion of a pano crop would work very well too. I would also take away the vertical reflection in the lower half of the image.

I like the first one as I can see the entire baby body, can't never go wrong with the ultra low angle. You've caught a beautiful moment.

Lovely moment captured. Like the OP more and my 2 cents is for a crop from the bottom, about half the reflection. Either way, pretty cool and very well done.

How cute! Fantastic angle, background, sharpness and exposure. Agree on a better head angle for the chick.
