Default Rumour: Canon 1D Mark IV in September

    According to www.canonrumours.com:

    1D Mark IV [CR2]

    September Announcement
A solid source has confirmed the launch of a new 1D camera in September.
The camera will be available for purchase in October in a limited number. Stock should be in full swing by the time Vancouver 2010 rolls around.
The camera will remain APS-H. The source added “photojournalists and sports photographers alike have overwhelmingly thrown their support behind the APS-H sensor. If you want full frame for your landscape and portrait work, Canon provides a superb 5D Mark II and 1Ds Mark III”.
    There you have it.

Maye I'm naive, and I know I'm an optimist, but I can't see Canon releasing a buggy mkIV after the mkIII debacle. Surely they've learned their lesson.

This is my feeling as well. Maybe a few tweaks in firmware as is usual for all bodies and all companies. I just can't believe there will be major flaws.

Just in case anyone isn't aware, Canon rumors are almost always wrong. Canon holds its secrets quite well.

If that be the case, does anyone know a qualified Beta Tester? If so your faith is not corroborated by history.

I suspect that it will always be the photographer that makes the great image not the camera as proven by past experiences.

Canon may well make a great camera as it has done many times in the past, my favorites being the F1 and A1 but in the end it was the chap at the end of the lens that made the difference, as I am finding out more and more as I enter the digital era.

We all seem to be “wondered” by technology and “software” and “equipment” but where is the “Photographer”?

I recently attended an exhibition of a great Australian photographer Frank Hurley and sat and cried as I observed his work and how he achieved it.

I wonder whether he could have achieved the results with a better camera or whether it was simply the fact that Frank was a fantastic photographer with the ability that we all hope our wonderful cameras can replicate.

I think I would opt for the first and I know which I will remember to the end of my days.

Chris, you are, of course, correct about the photographer being more important than the equipment.

The reason some of us are excited about and anxiously awaiting the new 1 series camera is that the camera we are using is old, has a lot of actuations, and is generally in need of replacement as we have used it a lot. Some of us passed on the 1DMK3 due to the apparent AF issues, but now a few years later really need a new camera. So, an upcoming announcement for the new body is of major interest to us.

Clearly it is the photographer and not the photography equipment that produces the ultimate image. Having said that I would certainly expect a photographer of any level to produce at least the same level of imagery with newer equipment as they produced with lesser equipment. I would also expect - as a generalization - that a Professional using newer equipment would produce a higher level of imagery if the newer equipment provided better features that were pertinent to that photographer's pursuits.

Assuming you have good if not great basic techniques, certainly more sensitive sensors allowing for higher ISOs and SS, and AF systems with increased tracking capabilities will hopefully open up additional opportunities for the Professional to achieve even more remarkable results in situations not previously possible.

If that is the case, then one would assume that better tools in the hands of an amateur will also assist in obtaining better results assuming a minimum level of capability.

I don't believe amateurs spend thousands of dollars on equipment - at least I don't - in the belief that the equipment will allow them to replicate the images of the Professionals.

I believe we buy newer equipment because WE CAN, and because we believe that with better tools we have greater opportunity to increase our individual levels of imagery.

I want the 1D4 because right now all I have is the 5D2 having sold my 40D at a time when I could recoup 100% of the price originally paid, and I did so knowing I want to buy a second body for moving critters.
    Cheers, Jay

Have no fear, I want one as well but this time I will await the assesments of far more experienced users of high end equipment than I am and I am still a long way off mastering the MKIII.

I find the 5D MKII a joy to use but it is no Pro body and I am looking for a 1Ds MKIII second hand to take the brunt of our wilderness and weather here. Once one gets addicted to FF, I find I need one with me at all times.

There are too many transition from the 1D Mark III to its replacement.

    1. AF issue
    2. Lub going to the the shutter mirror
    3. Winter Games
    4. World Cup
    5. Nikon D3
    6. Recent price cuts reported worldwide

For cultural reason they may call it the 1D Mark IIIn (makes no sense marketing wise) or Mark V. Something related to '4' is negative.
