Erik,
I think you did a good exposure in a difficult situation. You did an excellent job bringing out detail in a backlit subject. Your focus is very sharp with excellent feather detail. I like the position of the feet. Note that you "clipped" the near wing primaries vs. a purposeful "cut". See "Art of Critique II" thread elsewhere in this forum. The bird was past you when you captured the image so we get a lot of rear end and little front end. That might work IF you can get the bird to turn around and give you a solid stare but, as you noted, the HA needs improvement. Where was your light coming from? I appears to be almost overhead and it's very difficult to pull an acceptable image out of any lighting where you, the subject and the sun aren't in a straight line. Almost always, to quote our favorite IPT Leader, "point your shadow at the bird..." (how did I do, Artie?). Any way, that's my two cents.
Dean--Thanks for your kind remarks and helpful criticism. I have just discovered the educational forums and look forward to working my way through that material. It has been like a whole new photographic world since I discovered this site, and I am truly grateful for the help I received from people like you in the short time I have been a member.
By the way, it's always good to hear from another Californian, even if he lives in Maryland!
