    Default Unfortunate hare

In a light rain, I captured this image of a coyote with his catch on the Park Road in Denali NP. I would have loved for him to be off the road, but you take what you can get. We had watched this guy hopping around in the edge of the woods chasing the showshoe hare, and he emerged here with the unlucky guy clenched in his jaws. I shot this image standing on the seat of a Ken's truck, looking out through the sun roof.

    Tim,
Nice moment captured. I like the eye contact and the composition. I guess this fellow showed up close to your vehicle. It would have been great if you could have clicked from a window rather than the sun roof. That way, you could have included less of the road.

    Cheers,

Amazing moment .. The story behind the image is what is most important here and the eye contact is also an added punch :) Congratulations for the image

    Hey Tim,
I see you got to visit Ken! I wasn't able to make it this year.....we've been missing connections for a few years now. You may want to try darkening the URC portion of the road.....just to minimize the impact some. Super story and look. Did you get any where he was entirely on the darker part? Let me guess....as usual....he probably looked away and ran off! Still must have been very cool to witness!

Thank you for your comments and suggestions.

Subharghya... Would have loved to do that, but shooting from lower position was not possible because the coyote was on the opposite side of the vehicle. I went up through the roof and was fortunate to get off a few shots before losing eye contact with the animal. I got three images with eye contact but I liked the one I posted the best.

Roman... you are correct. He was moving to the left and by the time he was all the way on the dark part of the road, his head was facing forward and the eye contact was lost. I had quickly removed the extender from the lens just prior to this, and put the 300 back on by itself, or else I would have been too close to get any shots. And yes, I spent 11 days up in Denali shooting with Ken. It was a great trip. I think I had the 100-400 on the Mk2N, so I don't know why I shot these with the 40d, other than it was probably the camera I had in my hand when the coyote emerged.

I think is not about the road it's about the story telling and waht happen at hte time, you were not in control, i got critic before because of that. well done and good catch

The action overrides the presence of the human element IMHO, and effectively the road is part of nature for going through the Coyote's home. So well done Tim. I like Roman's thoughts on darkening the URC.

Nice capture, Tim. I really like that the coyote is wet, and the fact that it has a snowshoe hare for dinner really makes it special.
