A common tern chick from Nickerson. I love Nickerson, all that beautiful sand. This guy was just standing off by himself. Anyway, taken with the 40D, 500f4 + 1.4 AV 7.1, 1/2000 ISO 400

great looking techs! exposure looks spot on to me. only issue is you might get arrested by the HAP. we will leave it to the chief to decide, but i think it is just slightly angled away from the sensor. fine detail in that bird, carole!!

    Hi Carole,
I like the low capture angle and the open bill...I find the area around the eye is a little on the dark side...you have good feather details, and good color rendition...you need to adjust the level to about 1 degree CW rotation, it looks like the little guy is going down hill...:) I adjusted your base image and composition to illustrate these points...I cropped very little from the bottom and from the top of the frame, adjusted the contrast and boosted the saturation a tad, also tone down the warm whites on the body, opened up the shadows around the eye and selective sharpened it...see if this presents best to you...

    carole,

Nice picture, I noticed you were in AV mode and set aperture manually to f/7.0. I assume you are closing down stops rather than using EV compensation (just curious, many ways to get home). How does the histogram look, very much to the right, anything clipped.

Beautiful image and Gus's post puts it over the top. Where is this beach, it looks beautiful.

Hi Carole, you are right, a handsome devil indeed. I agree with Gus's comments and like his repost too. I love the open beak and it looks like your exposure was very good. The whites look pretty good to me with lots of subtle detail. Very nice shot!
By the way, is Nickerson Beach in New York or Connecticut?

I like it a lot Carole Good catching them doing a behavior If possible would work myself into a better sun angle but here the coverage is not bad !!!

Excellent re post by Gus .... one thing to point out .. on the beach sometimes the sand slopes and thats the way it is, difficult since there are no guides !!!
