This brown pelican, in breeding plumage, was grooming itself at La Jolla cliffs in mid-January. It was one of the few days that we were there that it didn't rain!

Very interesting pose, just a bit tight in the frame. The head could use some selective sharpening. Could you post some techs?

I love the eye contact, although it seems a little high in contrast from here.

The pose is very cool, but for me the crop is a little tight

As suggested, I opened the frame and sharpened the head a little. The details are as follows: 1D Mark II, 100-400mm at 375mm, 1/1250 sec, f/7.1, ISO 400, manual mode.

The sharpened head and extra room improves the image a lot. Plenty of detail in both the lighter and darker colours. I like the light blue BG.

The sharpening and extra room really improved the image.
