When a lovely pelican does a head throw but you are at 1000mm, what to do? Rotate to vertical ASAP and make soup from a stone (and hope to get lucky as I did here). When I made this image I had no idea that the eye would be visible... As I wrote (seemingly) a zillion years ago in The Art of Bird Photography, "When unexpected action occurs, push the shutter button." And that is even more true with digital than it was with film. This image was created while I was leading the San Diego IPT.

Canon 500mm f/4L IS lens with the 2X II TC and the EOS 1Ds MIII. ISO 800. Evaluative Metering +1 stop: 1/250 sec. at f/10.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome. Later and love, artie

This is fantastic. Love the pose, colors and details. The crop works well with the subject and they EYE is the key to this image.

    Excellent work!

Interesting! The eye being visible makes the image.
Do you suppose the upper bill is out of focus due to DoF or the slowish shutter speed? It seems to be DoF, but I can't say for sure.

    Artie,
The sharpness and exposure are of course top shelf.
I love the composition. I would like the frame at the bottom to be just below were the pouch meets the neck.

Really cool image of this behavior. I like your vertical pano crop choice and the placement of the eye along the center line works for me. I like the implied motion in the blurred bill tip, adds something extra. You done good in this low light.

Very unique image of a species that's commonly photographed. Well done!
