Went to Nickerson with the boys today. Very overcast but good practice and I got a few nice images of the chicks and juveniles. No action on this one but working on exposure factors, the light was really bad at this point. Canon EOS 40D, 100-400mm at 400mm, ISO 800, 1/250, f/5.6, external flash -2 1/3. May remove some of the greenery especially in the front. Very minimal done in PP at this point.

nice pose. the greenery doesnt distract me at all. only the little pink thingy at the bottom right corner. i'd remove that. i dont know what a juvy skimmer's eyes are supposed to look like, but if it's black i would fix it. did you sharpen the jpeg for web? looks a tad soft.

i know some may not like the yellow flower merging with the head. could have eliminated be going a little lower?

    Hi Nick

Might give the bird a little more room to the left Angle wise get flat on the ground and will make a difference !!! With sand it is not messy at all !!! Fun when they start flying !!!

... btw if you don't have enough shutter speed for flight go the other way and do blurs ... can be beautiful !!!

I like the pose and the greenery, your bird still stands out. Does look a bit soft to me. I love that you can see his markings.

    Hi Nick,
I like the capture...agree with the fine advise given...I would suggest on darkening the eye just a little and selective sharpen it...looking forward to your next one...

Nick, Good advice already given. These guys are getting big!! I really think you did great considering the lack of light and the greenery there.

I have a 40D and a ISO of 800 cause my shots to suffer quality and can cause a soft affect. What was your distance to subject. Your exposure techs, 5.6 and 1/1250, you had good light, not sure what the flash did for you. Was the fill helpful to eliminate shadows caused by the photo angles?

Nice work, love the beach images. Maybe sharpen and try to keep ISO at 400 or below. Did you point flash head at bird and use a BB?

Hi Nick, the flash has me curious too. Is that a flash shadow under the bird's body? The softness looks to me like those images that have flash exposure as well as ambient light exposure with slight movement during the exposure. 1/250 seems too fast for that to happen though.
Is this the Nickerson Beach in NY?

All good advice given above - just a tad more sharpening and some selective colour adjustments for me :)
    Keep em coming :)
