    Default Razorbill

I photographed this razorbill on the way to Machias Island. This was relatively early and the light was not very harsh yet. I also liked the calm water, this island is about 1.5 hours off the Maine shore.

Exposure nightmare, but you nailed it Axel. The bird looks great in that gorgeous blue water. Did you use camera support or was this hand held?

Love the fact that you got him swimming as I've never seen a picture of this(that I remember). Love the color of the water and the ripples in it. Nice eye contact and the blacks/browns look great. The whites look a bit blown and was wondering if you could recover some details there. All in all a very beautiful image. Congrats

Thanks, Brian! The whites are in the 230 range and look pretty good on my monitor.

Thanks, Bob! I lightened the eye a bit (except the pupil) and the light early in the morning helped, too.

Nice to get one in the water Axel. I'm glad the seas were calm for you. Exposure looks really nice and the blue water adds alot to the image. I like the slightly open mouth w/ a hint of color inside. Nicely done.

I like the swimming away-glancing back pose. The water has a very nice wave texture to it. Fantastic blacks, and although the whites are indeed not blown and in the 230s range I still wish to see a bit more detail in them.

Great to see one swimming. Excellent exposure, sharp, and just love the colour of the water. I would maybe take a slither off the bottom. How do you get from the main shore to the island- boat?

Fabulous work Axel. We have a saying in Oz that you must be built like a brick shxxhouse! :D In other words, handholding for you is no prob with that beast outfit! I love the calm water and the bird's pose. Congrats! :)

Cool Axel, would love to be able to get a few swimming shots like this one. The water is lovely as is the HT and blacks. I have to agree with Daniel though, there isn't a lot of detail in the whites even if the white slider is on 230, and I would like to see some more.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, here is a version with toned-down whites.

Thanks, Stuart! Yes, there are two tour operators who have landing rights and can take 15 people to the island.
