    Welcome Subharghya,

Wonderful subject, good BG and nice perch. I would suggest a little more noise reduction on the BG and a little more room on top. Also it would be nice to see this with a little bump in contrast and with some selective work on the iris of the bird (lightening and saturation). I am not sure about this but I think there might be a little colourcast green/yellow to your shot. Otherwise a great shot.

Hope to see more of your work

Welcome to BPN, Subharghya! Great first post, I like the angle, pose, sharpness and BG. I would give it a tad more room top and bottom and agree regarding noise reduction on the background. I'm not familiar with this species and can't comment on a possible color cast. Keep them coming!

Welcome to BPN sir...Awesome to see you here...fantastic first post...Since I'm a little more familiar with the species, I guess its ok to say that all the tones and colors are perfect...Loved the sharpness and composition too works well for me... Very difficult species to get out in the open so hats off to you for this one...
Agree on the NR in the BG though...

    Thanks Guys :)

Krijn, Axel Thanks for the Critique .. I agree about the Noise .. Actually I didn't do any noise reduction at all .. sometimes I am so lazy :D Sorry about that .. I have worked on the brightness/contrast and levels and here is another version of it .. I haven't change saturation as it is the natural color of it plumage which will be altered if I increase saturation ... Hope you all will like it even more :)

An incredible bird plus a really good capture, what more could you want.

The repost looks better, I have no idea of the real colours of this bird but I am glad you left them natural.

Just fantastic. The eye contact with the bird is so direct, and some great detail. I agree a little less background noise would be nice.

Like the repost better but both are nice. This owl makes a refreshing change from our North American owls. The one suspended talon adds quality to the image. Love the eyebrows :).

Welcome to BPN! What a great looking owl! I like the raised talon and the stare. Noise issue has been addressed. I'd like to see a little more canvas on the top, bottom, and right. Look forward to seeing more of your images!

Welcome to BPN. Now this is one owl species I havent seen. I like the "eyebrows" and he sure is focussed on something ahead. I like the raised foot, and another vote for more space all round. Keep them coming.

    Welcome Subhargya.
Its a beautiful pose, never seen a brown fish owl before.
I agree with comments of reducing the noise and adding some canvas at the top and bottom would really add a lot to this picture. Congrats!!

The colour of the owl is fine, I wouldn't change a thing there, but I would prefer a bit more at the bottom. If this is a FF image, I would leave it as it is, the space i.e. Agree with the noise in the BG. This is a wonderful image.

welcome. A very very good first post. With 40D at iso 640, you are going to need noise reduction. My method is to use quick-selection tool with refine-edge to select the background and run noise reduction. I do this in photoshop elements. takes 2-3 minutes max.

    Hi Subharghya,

This is my version. According to the average blur technique to remove colourcasts you were dealing with a yellow colourcast. I removed it, did some selective bluring of the BG (not selective enough maybe but I am lazy as well ;-) , some curve work, some saturation to the image, and selectively some saturation/lightening to the irises of the bird. Finally, I added some space to the top.

    Hope you like it,

    Cheers

An excellent contribution for your first submission. Other than that that has been addressed, I might have made less space on the left and more on the right towards the bird’s direction of sight. Just my two cents… Thanks for sharing this and keep them coming.

Subharghya, When I first opened this image, I just stared at it for several minutes smiling. That hairdo is beyond the beyond. (That means that I love it!)

I do prefer both of the reposts. Let's see some more!

    HUGE welcome Subharghya Bhai! :)

What an incredible image of an incredible species of owl to kick off! I love the composition, the look and as Artie said, that hairdo is a killer! Beyond killer. I can only see Krijn's repost and think it rocks. Your OP has a bit of noise in the BG. Hope to see more images soon!
    Thanks for sharing.

I like the " bad hair day " look ! ;) For my taste , in Photoshop , I'd give a round of shadow at 15-30-30 and a shot of linear contrast in the curves. It's a very photogenic owl ! Thanks for sharing !

Firstly I am Sorry for replying late .. As I am in India, I was in sleeping hours while you were viewing and commenting on this image and I could only get time to sit with this image in afternoon (It's 4:08pm here now) .. Firstly .. My Heartfelt Thanks to All of You for spending your time with this thread and for your efforts to make this discussion so valuable and enjoyable ..

I have processed this new version from scratch all over again to incorporate your suggestions of noise reduction, increase of space and removing color cast. I would love to know your views on this :)

Personally I like warm colors and that morning there were clouds that were obscuring the golden sunlight ( My Bad Luck :( ) but still I shot at Cloudy white balance which is about 5800 K in temp. While processing I have reduced the yellow cast to some extent but not completely because I felt it was altering the warm mood of that beautiful morning .. I otherwise absolutely agree with you all about the need of more space around and noise removal

    Thanks in Advance :)

Love what you did with the BKGR and the brightness! I still cannot help but stare at this one. Were you shaking as you got ready to make the first image?

Is this the typical hair-do for this species?

Thanks Again Arthur and David :)

Arthur I am Very Happy that you liked this cute fellow and it's hairdo :) These guys can have different lengths of hair styles from short haircut to long tufts like this one and I feel it was fishing a little while ago so some feathers got wet which is giving a feel of Hairstyling Gel application :D :D ... I will again say that I am really touched by your such Warm Welcome that I have no words to express it ... Hope I will be able to make some humble contribution from my kitty which can be worthy of this Wonderful Forum !!

PS : I forgot to mention that I mostly shoot handheld or with some support like beanbag etc. .. In this case I shot a set of images of this guy from a safari jeep while resting my hand on top of the holding bar of the jeep so if any mild shake is visible then it could be the vibration of the shutter that may have been magnified by the focal length :(

Great image to start with Subharghya. I prefer your last repost. Cloning of the BG distraction has improved the image. Agree on the Hairdo. I hope you don't mind me addressing you as Das on this forum. Addressing you as Subharghya seem a bit strange ;-)
