Three of these stately birds were walking in the long grass. As you approach in a vehicle they rarely fly but crouch lower and slowly walk away. I was too close to frame the whole bird and the original cuts off the virtual legs but I wanted a shot before it descended below the grass line. Does the square crop work?

Rob, as more of the head and neck are visible, I would like to see this as a vertical, cropping from behind, halfway through the body, and adding a bit to the top. I like the earthy colours in this, and the bustard is nice and sharp.

Wonderful bustard photo, Rob. Nice light, classic pose, good eye contact and great environmental context.
Square crop works for me but the truncation of the virtual legs is unfortunate.

This works very well, shows the habitat very well, and the eye-contact is spot-on

Another vote for a vertical crop as suggested by Stuart, to take the head off center. Having said that, very nice habitat included, beautiful bird, well exposed and good sharpness and detail.

Agree with Stuart about crop, if you can get a feel of a head sticking out of the grass it would be great.
I can imagine how shy these are and how difficult is to get a shot like this.
    Congratulations!

Another vote for Stuart's crop. Think it will strengthen the image although the habitat is pleasing and does add interest.
