1/500 s @ F8, ISO 200, Nikon D300 with 200 – 400 f4 AFS VR. Taken at about 10:15 AM on 7/27. Taken at Arthur Marshall Loxahatchee Preserve. All the other photographers had gone for the morning, leaving me alone with kites. I sweet talked the male down from his high backlit perch and he landed on the optimum position for photographs, a small cypress tree on the west side of the road and ditch. I missed the landing but after a few minutes he struck this poise. I don't think they like to come to this perch when there is a crowd there. :D Hope you like it!
Like the calling pose. Nice DOF and sharpness. I might have pushed my exposure another 1/3 to the right. With regard to composition, I find the bird a little tight in the frame. I would add a sliver on both the left and the bottom. More importantly I would add additional canvas on the right, as I think a horizontal crop would work better than a squarish one. Thanks for sharing!
I ditto doug's response. looks just a tad under. you could boost your ISO to get more shutter speed too. nice calling pose. i know exactly the tree. you got really lucky!!!!!
Great timing to capture this pose, together with the open beak. I like the colours around the beak, and agree, more space all round especially on the right will work well.
I like it a lot and you gotten great suggestions !!!
Find the feather quality excellent and its one tough bird to capture ... coming up with the right pose and exposure is only half of it !!! Love this image !!!!!
Beautiful, beautiful. I am so envious. I have been there for 3 days this week. They are really difficult birds to get perfect. Alfred is so right - the light has to hit them just right and the exp. spot-on. I haven't seen him on this close perch at any time, but I did get the female on one of the close trees.
