only the light angle hurt you here, adrian. the eye is shaded by the wing. otherwise, a great image!! and big congrats on your first keeper bee-eater in flight.

Great image. The prey really adds to the image. Agree with Harold the light angle hurt. You might try lightening the eye area. I might crop a little off the right and little less on the left. To me it looks a little tight on the left. Question for others:would a little bit of backfill flash have helped the eye area?

very doubtful, ray. the shutterspeed at 1/1250s would have been too quick for the flash. usually 1/320s or lower is what benefits from flash.

Adrian this would be tough with any lens !!!!

Do have a keeper !!!! Agree with Harold on all points !!! Regarding flash check on the unit for reach .. will amaze you at this setting might be under four meters !!!

Flash would be challenging here but we will never know. In manual mode, one needs a distance probably within 30 - 40 feet and a BB. Like Harold said, even with HS Sync, speeds over 250 can lose up to 50% of power. Of course, the larger the aperture the more light passing thru regardless of the reduction in power,..this stuff can drive you nuts.

Very colorful, this is a photoshop opportunity and a nice moment in nature catch. Thanks for sharing.

Adrian, If only for the shadow... I think this is a very nice image in every way except that darn shadow. The colors, sharpness, prey, and wing position really make this shot special, a keeper for sure. I would try my best to recover detail in the shadow area with PS. I would love to see more images from you of these birds.
