    Default Marbled Murrelet

Up at 4:30am...on the water by 5:30....I paddle out in to the bay as the sun rises over the Olympic Mountains. The water is calm and the sounds of the harbour seals tell me that there is life all around me…

A few kilometers off shore now and the water is remarkably calm - as calm as I have ever seen it. Today seems like a special day…

In the distance gulls are squawking and starting to converge in an area where bait fish are abundant. I race towards them to see what I can find…

There are birds everywhere. Glaucous-winged and Heermans Gulls, Rhinoceros Auklets and Pigeon Guillemots. A few Common Murres are also in the mix…

And then I spot them. A pair of Marbled Murrelets…

The adrenaline is now flowing and I quickly weigh in all the factors. How can I approach? Where is the light? How close can I get?

When it all comes together and Mother Nature offers up an experience like I had yesterday morning it is difficult to feel anything except grateful, enriched and overwhelmed at the world around us.

I hope you enjoy this one :)

Awesome image. Level is excellent. Sun temp is really cool. Droplets on back is a nice plus.
Could have been a tricky. How do you feel a zoom lens like Nikkor 200-400 still ok or better to say ideal for such kind of photography? I guess weight counts a lot.

Love the story and happy for your wonderful experience. This is a great image, you did wonderful with the exposure and the BG is great. Nice eye contact and sharpness is spot on. Love the little water beads on his back and the ripples just ahead of him. Maybe a little room ahead of him wouldn't hurt, but even as is a real nice image. Congrats.

Great story to go with a beautiful picture. The colors and the low angle are just perfect.

Lovely light, and exposure. I love that blue water. I might crop a small slice off the bottom.

    Well Done!

Cool story Glenn. Lovely warm light and colours, and nice and sharp. Please could you let me know what type of boat, canoe you paddle out with. Im sure its stable enough that you cant capsize and lose all your equipment. Cheers.
