The light angle coming from the right combined with the head angled slightly away has put the eye in shadow. Had the heron turned its head slightly our way the eye would have been better lit and done the image better justice - do you have any frames with such head turn?
You did get the exposure right, and you seem to have figured out sharpening for web, at least in this case :-) Composition-wise I'd prefer the bird a little higher in the frame, although I realize you may have had some FG disstractions to be careful of? Cropping a bit off above is another option...
