    Hi Rob,
There seems to be a lot of noise in the image somehow.. Is this a big crop? The whites near the head seem a bit blown out too... Harsh light i guess...

Rob you were on about noise. Images like this I most all the time use noise reduction selectively on the BG. These birds are tough to get due to their very white and then very dark feathers. The head maybe you could work on to reduce the whites that are blown a bit. Also, I find these birds best shown in flight with their swallowtail showing. Another thing when you are framing try to have the subject flying into the space. So, on this I would leave more room on the left. Hope this helps. Keep on practicing!!

I agree with whats been said, I'd also lighten the shadow on the eye a bit. Overall a nice image and beautiful species.

Hi Rob, Position of the bird is perfect as it has not passed your shooting position and has a perfect head angle slightly toward the camera. Improvements could be made by shooting this one in better lighting to help control the contrast. If this is indeed a big crop, I would consider presenting the bird smaller in the frame, giving more space below and in front of the bird.

    Good Shooting!

You captured the head angle nicely Rob. When shooting up to the sky, I usually dial in a + EC, to capture more detail, especially from the underwings. Should you blow areas, its easier to recover in ACR, than to try and bring out details in shadows. Apart from the noise in the BG, there is evidence of noise on the underwing and body. It looks like you have tried to recover some detail from shadows there, but I may be wrong. Keep them coming.

I like the pose and head-turn. There is quite a bit of background noise, I hope you don't mind me posting a version that has been passed through the Neat Image noise reduction add-on.

    G'day Rob

Simon's noise reduction has helped. I've started using it as a matter of course and it really helps. Really like the head position and eye contact.

    cheers
    Rob
