The Snail Kites use this perch, and many others not as close, to strip the snail out of the shell before heading to the nest to feed the chick(s). The male, however, does not prefer this perch and usually perches between the photographers and the sun.

Well-captured moment, Hugh, I love the wings-up position and the catchlight. Looks like the head could use another round of USM. Also suggest subtracting a little of the canvas on the RHS. Were you using a tripod with your lens and TC, or was this handheld?
