Default Male Snail Kite w/Apple Snail

The Snail Kites use this perch, and many others not as close, to strip the snail out of the shell before heading to the nest to feed the chick(s). The male, however, does not prefer this perch and usually perches between the photographers and the sun.

Nikon D300, 70-200mm lens, 1.4X TC, 1/1600@f6.3, ISO 800. About 80% of the original image.

Well-captured moment, Hugh, I love the wings-up position and the catchlight. Looks like the head could use another round of USM. Also suggest subtracting a little of the canvas on the RHS. Were you using a tripod with your lens and TC, or was this handheld?

    Wonderful capture. :)
It could work well as a vertical? Good wing pose and sharp where it counts!

Nice pose, light, comp, species and natural moment, great timing.
Nice subject, prey in the bill is a nice plus.

Very nice soft light and wing position. You really got the red eye to show. Love the Nikon blue in the sky :)

Great action! I too would prefer a vertical.

The subject was, unfortunately, too low in the frame to make a vertical.
