A lone lion staring, and a lone flower looking up at a lone lion staring wearing a Mohawk. ;) :D
In as much as changing that which was see and captured is part of the game, I would engage in PP magic and remove the ledge above and to the right of the lion's head as it is distracting.
Mr. King, himself, presents wonderfully. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Jay

Wonderful shot Michael. Love that stare and almost monochromatic color scheme. As Jay said, would remove that dark patch and possibly a tad more contrast to help it pop.
Awesome pose and all good points covered
he looks in great shape
BTW what a hairdo :)

Michael,
Can you let us know where you took this it looks remarkably like one of those Mohican Lions from Botswana.
The repost works very well,
Great pose and stare... I like the front leg/paw position especially to complete this awesome pose.
Thank you for your helpful comments, they are much appreciated.
With regard to your comment Ken, the photo was taken in the Kruger National Park earlier this month.
According to the guide this young male belonged to a pride that was potentially a problem. Nine young males in the pride had bonded together as a group and were too strong for the male and females to expel from the pride as they reached maturity. As such a strong group they were capable of upsetting the "balance of power" for all neighbouring prides.
The guide also said that feeding would be a problem as there were nine young males, five females and one mature male. Each fully grown lion can consume up to 60 kgs of meat at one sitting and as a fully grown zebra weighs 140-160 kgs you can imagine the amount of meat required by the pride and the fights that would occur after each kill.
Michael
I love this image. The light and the look are killer. The darker area at the top is not a huge concern for me. Love the postion of the front leg, and the tiny flower emphasizes his size and strength.
If you draw a line with the Ruler Tool through the pupils you might wish to rotate it CCW to level that stare.

Outstanding portrait, light is wonderful. Peter's repost really pops it. Rotation may improve it a bit, but I find it excellent as is.
Michael,
I liked this image. I love the low angle and the stare. The repost looks better. 60kgs look to be on the higher side. Thanks for sharing. Look forward to more.
Cheers,
