Default A Little Scratching Going On!

This photo was taken on Joe Overstreet in Kenansville, Fl yesterday morning, July 23, 2009 This was was taken with a Nikon D200 and a 500mm manual focus lens. Below are the camera settings I used.
    ISO - 400
    F-Stop - f6.3
    Speed - 1/1250 sec

I used Photoshop to enhance the tonal range and sharpen it. I removed the blue color from the birds beak and added a catch-light to the right eye. I used Nif DFine 2.0 to remove the noise from the BG.

I would appreciate your critiques on this photo. Thanks ADubin

    Arnold:

This one makes me smile. :)

Your bird is sharp with nice colors. The red channel is a bit overexposed, and it shows in the loss of detail in the yellows at the very top of the breast. Nice job on noise reduction.

Because of the way the bird is facing, looking towards, us, I might consider cropping in a bit from the right. It would be more of a square crop, but I think for this subject, it would work.

    Thanks for sharing.

A very easy way to fix the slight clipping of the yellows is to selectively desaturate the yellow channel by about 3-5 points (on the bird'd yellows only as you don't want to affect other areas of the image such as the BG). Although the perch is not the nicest I still would have preferred if you had opinted the lens down a bit as I'm find the bird low in the frame, and I agree with Randy about cropping away some at right. You may want to explore doing a CCW rotation as the image feels like it is tilting a bit downward from left to right.

Funny pose! I like how the meadowlark looks quite grumpy, and the fuzzy hairdo helps accentuate the expression. You also offer us a great view of the black "V neckless". Thanks for outlining your post-processing work done - those steps taken look well executed.

I just love the pose and the look on the bird's face. It is too much! I agree on the need to level the image and I agree that the yellow have been mis-handled most likely during image optimization. There is a great thread on saving the yellows in the ER. Best to study it

I agree with the positive comments above suggested edits. Over all very nice with lot of character. My personal preference would have been for a natural perch but this is only a minor distraction in this image as the bird more than makes up for the post in my opinion. Enjoyable image! Thanks for sharing.

Pose is nice and detail, sharpness and BG are great, agree about the yellows and IMO it could use some more room at the bottom. Congratulations!

A very nice behavioral shot. The green background is smooth and complimentary, showing off the colors of the bird. The eyes are sharp. Well done!

Great behavioural action, and I like the direct eye contact. I agree to CCW rotate the perch, and to desat the yellows.

I always like it when there is some kind of action vs. a bird that is just sitting. Even scratching. It's always better IMO. Very nice.
