stunning shot in great light Chris! you can see the focus is on the face. I like the hint of detail in the BG and think that it would have been an even better shot if the shadow of the face hadn't fallen on the wing. :)
but still - I can only dream of a shot like this at this stage (can you say "1.5fps" ;))

Now that's flight photography at its best IMO
Great show at strong light, the pose of the bird and the mean
look show great attack feel, the image quality and as you say focus
are superb by the D3. All combined with excellent crop, composition and fine BG.
I can only imagine the speed of the bird at the moment (flight posture suggests very high speed),
and yet as sharp and great as it gets.
For the benefit of a novice like me could you please give us more detail on the
    focusing settings here?

    Amazing picture Chris,
We feel the intensity in the bird's eye. The sharpness and exposure are spot on. I like the composition and the sky is a killer. Perfect shot!

Super comp, with good placement in the frame, and this is pin sharp where it counts. Excellent exposure throughout, and I like the foliage in the BG.

Cracking shot Chris. Superb comp, did well with the lighting: (no issues with shadows), detail is great as is sharpness and a bg to die for. You lads from SA are putting on a terrific show!

11 out of 11, hmm, makes me think. :) I like the sharpness, angle and inclusion of the vegetation in the BG. Maybe the wing position is not ideal but I would take it any second. BTW, colors and white point look very good in this one.

Pretty cool! I like the fine barring on the sides. If anything I would lighten the iris just a bit and I wish the strand of vegetation didn't extend to the talons, but WOW this is good :-)

Very stunning Chris. The details in this one are awesome. Love the colors on this guy and his serious look are amazing. Even the BG looks great to me. Simply outstanding.

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions, appreciated as always! Ilija, for BIF I always use the centre sensor with 9 expanded focus points, and I always keep the camera on that setting in continuous focus mode, even for stationary subjects.
