    Default Now a little higher...

I photographed these razorbills on Machias Island last week. They were really into each other. :) Moving further to the right was not possible because I was in a blind. I lightened some shadows in this one.

Sweet interaction, Axel. I''m really enjoying your images form the trip, hope to make there next year :)

I like the detail in the browns and the sliver of yellow displayed by the one on left.

You have really cleaned up in the "portrait behavioral" images. These are as nice as I've ever seen from there. Maybe I can work out a trip up there next year.....definitely on my list.

Another stunnning image. Lovel interaction and great poses, excellent exposure control and superb detail and sharpness. I like the tight comp as the sense of intimicy is better.
    Congratulations!

This is very cute, must love the pose. Another great in the series!
I'd like to see a smaller crop if possible? I think that would work here too.

Interesting behavior and stunning detail. I never noticed this before, but their eyes appear completely flat in this image. There doesn't seem to be any roundness to the eye at all. Hmm.

Thanks, Erich! The eyes of this species really look unusual. In this image you can see the shape of it better (the bird on the right): http://www.pbase.com/axelhi/image/11...0/original.jpg

A tender moment well spotted Axel. Am I seeing correctly, that the one on the right has black on the inside of the beak, and the one on the left, yellow, as you showed us in a previous image. Either way, who is male and female. It seems like you have the exposure on these guys nailed. Another great capture of the razorbills.

Thanks, Stuart! Male and female razorbills look very similar and the gape is yellow in both sexes. Females are a little bit larger and heavier but it's not easy to differentiate.

The fish they eat is somewhat bigger than those that puffins prefer and this is why they nest in the same area without competing for food.

I find their mating behavior quite interesting: Before laying their eggs, at least half of the females leave their mates and sneak off to another ledge to copulate with other males. Then they come back and copulate with their mates on an average of 80 times in the 30 days before the laying of the first egg. Later, while their mates are safely occupied incubating their eggs, the females slip away again to the neighboring ledge for more copulation. The couplings are like auditions to see who is better and are probably important in pair formation. (Carey, J. 1993. The Secret Lives of Birds. National Wildlife, June/July: 38-45. )

Hey Axel, thanks for the info. I know what I wanna be in my next life.

Been meaning to ask, have you got a full body shot of a razorbill - would like to see what their legs and feet look like. Cheers, Stuart.
