    Default Incoming Northern Gannet

A shot from my recent visit at the german island of Helgoland in the North Sea.

    D700, AF-S VR 70-200/2.8 @ 170mm.

    Thanks for watching.

    Daniel:

Nice image, with excellent wing spread, sharpness, HA.

I like the basic comp, but purely as a matter of personal taste, I would crop off 20% of the open space to the right. Want space to fly into, bit since the atttention is directed down along the diagonal to the corner, I think the slightly tighter crop would work.

    Thanks for sharing.

Exposure control, sharpness and BG look good. The left and right side of the image look somewhat darker than the rest, did you darken them?

I personally like the comp as is, but Randy's suggestion is another option. Looks like you applied some vignetting (as Axel also remarked)? The bird pops nicely against the darkish blue BG.

Very nicely done. Love the placement of the bird in the frame, the sharpness, and the spot-on EXP. Is the BKGR as it was out of the camera? Did you darken the corners and edges to emphasize the bird?

    Thanks for your comments!

The background is as it was from the camera, havenīt really noticed that before...but you stare youre self blind on your own pictures sometimes. I have read about some vignetting with the 70-200 and the Nikon FX-cameras but havenīt given it at thought until now.

Nice exposure, and wing position. Lovely blue BG. I wish the bird were more at eye level though, as it looks as though you are looking down on the bird.

In addition to what others have said......I really like the pattern of the water. It adds depth to the image. Well done.

Great shot of this beautiful species. Helgoland is really a great place to photograph those fellows.
I like the composition and the blue background. Perfect exposure. Great wing pose.

This is lovely Daniel. You are right in that the 70-200 has a rep' for vignetting on FX, but pretty easy to fix if you want to. Like this as is.

Actually, this is another reason why I like the image...because this perspective makes me feel as if I'm at the edge of a cliff looking down towards the sea and onto oncoming gannets.:)

Thanks for the info, Daniel. The edges surely do look darker. What aperture did you use?

Super comp, and well exposed on the whies. I like the landing posture, and the gannet stands out nicely against the sea BG.

Thanks Daniel. Vignetting is greatest at the wide open aperture so that makes sense.
