Default Night at the drilling rig

Ok, so the new assignment is night shots with lights, is it? Okay!! Here is an ETL image taken in December at midnight on a gas well drilling rig in NE BC. The site is always lit up with these enormous yellow kleig lights. Huge. Blinding, actually. This is a coil truck, it supplies tubing to flush the well with acid. Also huge. It was snowing to beat the band. I usually stand around in the -20 or so C, sometimes colder, and watch the flare, I am there for the sulphur dioxide. I know its very grainy. Its supposed to hurt, looking at this. :) But seriously tell me if I should just throw this out.

    Canon Rebel, f/4, 1/100 s, iso 400 24-105 no flash.

    Hi Katherine,
I like this the way it is...the feel is off the charts, grain and all and the color rendition depicting the actual conditions on that day...it tells the story...congrats looking forward to more...:)

THIS IS A KEEPER IN MY BOOK...:D

Thanks Gus, I am lucky enough to be one of maybe a 100 or so women working in the gas exploration industry. Out of maybe 7000 people or so. The photo ops are great, and I hope to post more... I am glad you approve. This image has every flaw in the book. But I like it anyway.

Wow Kat! You certainly get some interesting shots. This one is remarkably different to the ones you normally post. You occupation sounds interesting. Funny, most of my day shots look like this one.:o

Your picture certainly looks sulphury as well. I was thinking you could put one of those "film grains" over to emphasis the feel? I like the crop and colouring.

Kat, when I read your post the first thing I thought of was whether your glass is half empty or half full or COMPLETELY FULL!

You say your image has every flaw in the book; I say it doesn't have any flaws!

If it was a clean image with, in your flaw book, no flaws - it would not tell the story that it is tellilng.

Ergo, no flaws - tells a story about what is going on at the moment: bloody cold et cetera et cetera.

You can share those flaws anytime! :D
    Cheers, Jay

Katherine, I've been wondering about your reply about the amount of gear you carry. Now I know why! Very interesting. i hope to see a lot more pics on this subject.

I like the mood of this image. I would also like to learn IF there is a way to shoot this without the noise.

Hi you guys, thanks for all your wonderfully kind comments. My gosh. Cheryl, the noise is really caused by the snow pounding down and shooting into such an horrendously bright light. Now Fabs has remarked on some noise in another shot of mine that I can use the sharpening process I havent learned yet to remove noise... ?? I have other snow shots... no shortage of bad photography... LOL!!!

BTW. The photograph (in landscapes) of the L. Burnt River was taken the next morning. We got about 2 and a half feet of snow overnight. It was a mess. I am at the end of my career, I am 55 and want to retire. I wish I had better cams in the old days. And I wish I knew then what I have learned HERE in the past couple of weeks. My question is, I have a compendium of photographs, but some of them are jpegs, or old slides and prints, and I dont know if they are worth anything at all.

Thanks again. I am not getting any "work" done due to this very fun and incredibly constructive / instructive site...!

I like this image, the mood, the yellow light. I think noise helps depict the tough condition in this case, -20C, way too cold for me. Here in Thailand it's alway summer.

By the way every image has its own story, so they are all worth showing.

Love it as presented and sure has lots of feel !!

Kat noise is not always bad and don't mind anything that is going on here. One suggestion ..... on images like this you do not want any sharpening or if you do some just on the parts that mater !!! We got lots of tutorials on how to but if you need just shoot a PM !!!!
