Back to macro and flies Flies can be frustrating but at times cooperative Will take off and land in the same area just like the dragonflies !!! If you go after them with a macro lens make sure to take extension tubes for getting full frames, lens itself will not be enough

    Comments welcome and much appreciated

Alfred, Another jewel-toned beauty!! The extension tubes really do work out well! I like the DOF

    Alfred,

I've recently become a member of BPN after taking a little time to see what the forums are like, and look forward to sharing and learning from the members. I really like the tone of the forums; it seems to be a very civilized atmosphere, even when there are very significant differences of opinion. I haven't actively participated in this type of online community before, so I read the BPN FAQ to see how it all works. I assume that you and the other moderators and members will let me know if I goof up as I learn my way around.

It looks like 'Eager to Learn' is the place for me to start, and I'm relatively new to digital photography anyways, with about 3 years of experience. So, here goes...

As the majority of leaves are greenish, I like that the fly is on a red leaf as that provides a nice contrast with its green body. I also like that the red in its eye is a similar tonality to the leaf. It is tack sharp where it counts too! I attempted macro work about 30 years ago and remember how difficult it can be to get the plane of focus exactly where you want it. The DOF in this shot is of course very narrow - is it correct that using 2 extension tubes as you did will make the DOF even shorter than without them?

BG color brings so much to this image! Nice that the little critter aliegned himself with the leading edge of the leaf.

    Big Warm Welcome Ron !!!!

Thanks for the kind words !! That is exactly what we are trying to do here ... a calm atmosphere is the most important key !!

I'm partial to this forum (ETL) and you will see lots of people posting here could do so in any other gallery ... many reasons. Personally I learn something every day from the post and look forward to what is being posted.

For commenting you did just what needs to be done, just say what you like or dislike of the image in your opinion. The more participation we get the more we benefit. Its good to keep in mind comments are just personal opinions and there are few right or wrongs !!!

The macro assignment coming up might be interesting for you, not really huge changes in equipment for the past years just big changes on the information available !!!!

Hi Ron, I will "third" the welcome! I like to peek into a new member's website - just looked at your website - and enjoyed it very much! I do so mainly to "borrow" ;) compositional/subject matter ideas, and to consider various website layouts for when I think I am ready for my own website. You have a lot of great images, and I like the clean feel of your presentation. I especially like that you display your images in mini sequences and have a small explanation of each image. Thanks for joining BPN; I look forward to learning from your posted images and critiques.
    Cheers, Jay

    Alfred, Denise, and Jay,

Thanks very much for the warm welcome. I appreciate it very much and look forward to sharing ideas and learning. And thanks Jay for the nice comments about the site. It's been a lot of work getting it to its current state. I'm anticipating that what I will learn here will allow me to improve on it soon!
