    Default Little blue silhouette

A little blue heron catching marine worms on Biscayne Bay. The sun was positioned at about 2 oclock. I have a new zoom lens and was testing it out on this day.

    1/2000, I believe it was +1EV, f5.6, 400mm
Postprocessing: Alittle crop on right and top. Increased the temp to give it more orange.

Hi Connie. I like the fishing pose with the little splash of water. Speaking of the water, I like the orange color and calm surface. I'd probably crop a bit off the bottom of the frame. If you were going for a silhouette, neutral or even underexposure would have given you a darker silhouette and more colorful water right out of the camera.

Good points made by Doug. If you want a complete silhouette, you can go into PS and selectively darken the bird in Levels. For this image, I would like to see a tighter crop as well. You also might try a bit of rotation.

Also for more orange water, you can raise the color temperature in camera to around 7000K

I too would like to see this a bit tighter. I do love what has been done but the water needs some more color.

Yes, a tighter crop would look great - as well as a slight CW rotation (image is leaning down from right to left). If you do keep the subject small in the frame I would suggest tucking it closer to the LRC (perhaps some adding of canvas would be needed left and top but it should be easy with this simple BG). Good timing with this pose, and I like the curled tail feather :-)

Nice silhouette, reflection and water colors. I agree with Doug regarding in-camera settings and with Daniel regarding CW rotation. I think several compositions could work but I like your choice.

I like the loose crop but I could suggest a pano crop or change comp and locate the bird more to the upper right.
    Nice image as presented though.
    Congratulations!

Great silhouette against a colourful BG. I agree regarding rotation.

Super colour captured here, I have to agree with the CW rotation, and the fact that you could do a couple of different comps with this image. I personally would not have the subject so centered on the horizontal.

Hi Connie. Like what you have done and as mentioned, with suggestions made, this will polish off nicely. (My fav' goes to Ramon's suggestion of cropping to push it higher right which will increase dynamism and interest IMHO).

Thank you everyone! I'll play around with it and maybe repost it. I agree with some comments that there is lots of room to play with given the bg. Doug, in particular, thanks for the exposure advice, I will take that to the field with me.

Connie, I took the liberty of playing with this a little bit. Lots of potential here.
First, I straightened it, measuring by the ripples and cropped. Then added black to the blacks in Selective Color, the used a bi-color filter in Nik Color Effex Complete.
    Hope you like it.

Fabs, yes I think that was a brilliant change. Since I use LR mostly, I'm going to see what effect I might get with the graduated filter. Thanks for the help!

I love images like this one. Well done. Fabs' repost takes it to a new level. I have just learned heaps from that very post. Thanks to you both. :)

Connie, you may have a gradient filter that would look the same.

Are you planning to go to Loxahatchee any time soon?
