Well if that's not butterfly perfection I don't know what is! The lighting on this is so fascinating - you really get a sense of him being in his environment. The purple splash behind his head is such a nice touch! I love the way the scenery is visible in the center of the frame and then falls away to the BG. This is a superb image, Mike.
I like the comp, background, and sharpness, Michael. I also like the way the head is framed by the purple spot in the background. I'm usually not a fan of mixed light, but I think it works in this case as the whites are not blown and the shadows still have detail - and it also brings out the texture in the wings. I would wish for a better specimen as the lower wings are quite tattered. Also the way the front leg (maybe the second leg also) is hanging over the side of the leaf makes it appear that the butterfly is just draped over the leaf instead of actively perching there. :)
I like that spot of magenta behind the butterfly's head. Also, the beautiful texture of the wings. Mixed feelings about the torn wings--wish they were perfect, but, something about them being torn makes this butterfly seem more real. The one brightly lit leaf in the center is a bit distracting--maybe it could be toned down. Lovely lighting overall.
Beautiful composition with the placement of the butterfly and simplicity of the foreground elements. The background works well and I agree with Anita... love the spot of magenta behind the butterfly's head. Well done.
