    Whooping Crane feeding young

    Central Coast Coast

    D3, 850 MM, ISO 200, f5.6 @ 1/800, 0 comp, early morning light.

I cloned out a darker band (bank) at the top of the frame.

What a treat to have perfect clear morning light, unbanded birds with the adult feeding her chick the leg of a Blue Crab.

Stunning light, natural moment, comp and BG. Wish for a slightly better head angle from the adult. Great exposure and colors too.
    Congratulations.

Great behavior capture Alan! Love the sharpness and exp. It may be a bit tight in the frame, but the detail makes up for that!

Wow, the young seems to be even bigger than the adult! The light is just fantastic Alan and the timing very good. I wish for just a litle bit more room around the birds and a better head angle of both birds would be the ice on the cake. Very good image

    Alan:

Techs noted, but perhaps some of our members from abroad don't realize how rare this bird is. I would be thrilled just to see one up close, let alone get a picture in such light, that tells and interesting story.

Hope you have some more in the series to share!

Just wondrous light on this intimate moment!!! The head angles are perfect for me since it emphasizes the interaction between the two ( and both eyes are clearly visible to us). I think the tightness enhances the intimacy in this case and love the reflection colors as well! Congrats! BTW, This image really makes me think how much we would all be diminished if we ever lost this species...

Hi Alan: You absolutely nailed this one. I like the way the juvie has the emphasis in the frame with gorgeous angle, light, uplifted feathers. The details and action you have acquired are amazing, and having both birds sharp is a plus, since that's not an easy task. The HA work well b/c of the interaction of the two and both eyes are clearly visible.

You were lucky to capture these unbanded birds in such amazing behavior and light. Thank you for sharing, and I hope there are more in the series. Marina

Oh, what a treat to get to photograph this, Alan. What a moment captured. I suppose the only critique I can come up with is suggesting you move a couple of feet left to have the birds parallel to the sensor, but I am sure you would have done that if you could have. Very sweet.

Beautiful light and detail, and a great behavior shot too. It's a little tight in the frame, but the head angles look good to me, as the image focuses on their interaction with each other, and not with the camera.

    Hi Alan,
Beautiful shot, the gorgeous light really shows on the picture. Lovely behavior caught and nice composition of the birds. Although my initial response would have been that a better headangle on both birds would have made this perfect, I am thinking now that them being busy with the food item more than with your presence is giving that little bit of extra to the behavioral quality of this photo. Also moving more to your left would have probably affected the perfect light direction on the subject. So all in all I think you couldn't have done better, excellent shot, well done!
