    Default Flycatcher, or?

Hi guys. Haven't been able to positively ID this little one. Thought it might be a flycatcher or titmouse or even a pewee, but can't seem to match it up to anything with much certainty.

Captured in oak habitat next to the Pacific Ocean, in Sycamore Canyon, California - just north of Malibu.

    Thanks in advance!

Hi Kerry- I'm away from my Sibley right now, but can say this is a flycatcher. Pewees are flycatchers but titmice are unrelated. The bird has the overall look of a flycatcher with drab, olive colour, big eye and crest. I suggest as well that we could narrow this down to the genus Empidonax because of the overall look and the lightish feathers above the bill and through the eye. However, that's where the problems start because this genus is very difficult to ID even if the image shows most of the field marks, which this one doesn't. One method we could use is process of elimination based on range but as I don't know where Sycamore Canyon is, I'll leave that to you Kerry- Could you note the species that it could be based on where you saw it.

Hi John, sorry for the vague location. Malibu is on the coast north of Los Angeles (Santa Monica, actually) and Sycamore Canyon is just north of that. Narrowing the search down to Empidonax and range led me to Empidonax difficilis - Pacific-slope Flycatcher. Good photos on Bob Steele's site. http://www.bobsteelephoto.com/Species/psfl.html

    Thanks!

Can't help identify the bird due to not enough information available in the photograph, but I'd suspect it may be a Pewee. Are there any other photos of this bird showing the back and wings?
