Entertained watching these teenage-looking chicks chasing after their food. Lighting not brilliant as in shadows, and not sure that is as sharp as could be. All advice & comments most welcome

    Canon 50D, 100-400m @ 400m f5.6 1/1600 ISO800 +0.67 exposure

P.S only really been trying my hand at bird photography for a month or so, so lots to learn! (first post on BPN)

Hi Gordon - a big warm welcome to the BPN Family - I am sure you will enjoy it here.
Tough one to start with - black and white birds are hard to expose except in soft light - looks like the light was nice and soft here - you did well.
The image looks quite soft with some loss of detail maybe - have you applied any noise reduction to the whole image??
I would also think that ut has a slight blue cast - look at the whites on the top of the adults head - look a little blueish on my screen - plenty of info on how to fix in the educational resources forum.

As presnted I would crop some from the top and bottom to give it more of a pano feel - tough to get three good HA'S.

    Keep them coming

Hi Gordon - I think this is quite a lovely composition with lots of implied action.
When I first looked at it I couldn't figure out why the youngster on the right looked so much softer than the other 2 birds. Anyway I tried doing some basic modifications: cropped more tightly, levels (establishing black and white points) and then a double pass of unsharp mask after selecting the birds and refining the edges. This modification may be too over the top, not sure.
    Cheers

Hi Gordon Big Warm Welcome !!!

Re post looks good, big improvement. You got it tight and to show the action Might want to check histogram since it could be a little under?

Tech wise you got a good shutter speed but in this case would have gone for dof With multiple birds is a must and focusing wise would try focusing 1/3 into the frame ... and take lots of it. This type will have a high delete ration !!! Getting pleasing head angle is difficult !!!
