I was so fascinated with watching the exchange between Mom and Chick that I missed bunches of opportunities. I got this one, but others are blurred, either because the Chick was so incredibly fast, or the fish got dropped and both Mom and Chick scrambled. Great fun!

All comments and criticism greatly welcome. Thanks!

James - I love the offspring and parent interaction. Good sharpness and nice quiet bg.
I am tempted to crop a bit tighter, but preserve the reflection. I also ran levels on the image and pulled in both ends of the histogram and that seemed to make the image a bit more vivd.

I love the interaction between the moter and the chick, the fish is a plus. I also like the color of the chick. Wish you could a bit to the left and had a more straight on angle.

I like the repost, it makes the image looks more lively. I might try to crop off bottom, never mind about the refection, and see what happen.

Hi Jim - love the interaction.

Do post your full tech shooting info - as it will help us see what you are doing. Does look a little soft - maybe due to slow shutter speed - maybe a increase in ISO would hav ehelped.

    Keep them coming :)

    Hi Jim

I like tighter since it shows the action better. Image is a bit soft, hard to say without tech info but could be lack of shutter speed as Lance mentions? For these stop down since you are trying for two and dof becomes important !!!

What Gail was doing is setting the black/white points which should be the first thing you do !!! As shown gives the image some punch and its a good starting point !!!

Neat shot James. I like the crop that Gail has done and upped the vibrancy a bit. Hope you get more opportunities for this interaction. Looking forward to more!

    Hi James,
I like the inter action between mom and chick...I like the tighter crop with the added boost in saturation, I would suggest on running noise reduction in the background...

Like the interaction; the Gails' repost does it for me - much more vibrant and the crop makes them stand out more.

Thanks for all the very useful comments! Darn day job got in the way so I'm a bit slow to respond.

Sorry about forgetting this: Canon 40D, 100-400mm Canon lens, 1/400 shutter speed, f7.1, ISO640, focal length 640

With Gail's advice in hand I tried a re-crop and set the black/white points in levels. I also tried a bit of noise reduction. Am I getting closer?

Speaking of cropping though, my original post was a crop that I thought was called for. The original shot had the full bodies of both Mom and chick in it, but I thought it made it a bit too busy. Now I'm wondering. Perhaps I could post the image as captured at another time?

Thanks again for all the help!

A focal length of 640 with that equipment would have been something of a miracle! That should be 400.

James - I'd be interested in seeing the image with fuller views of both birds. Do post it when you get a chance.
    Cheers
    Gail
