Very nice DOF and color, you might try running a curves adjustment to pull out a little more detail in the feathers on the side of his head and neck. Nice capture for sure I don't think I've ever caught one in flight.

Not an easy subject to photograph in flight. Excellent exposure control, details and sharpens. Excellent work Judy!

This is a magnificent capture and so unusual getting the bird topside. Super composition and detail. You have a great skill.

Great capture Judy. The sharpness and soft light make the image what it is.

Beautiful...love the sharp eye and the top side look. Even the silvery water is a perfect canvas for this flyer.

Amazing capture, Judy. In-flight images are so difficult and then to get the sharpness with that wonderful background - Wow.. You are a master!

Beautiful job in this Judy Lynn! My only nit would be if the water was a nicer colour, but not much you could have done about that. :)

    Hi,

As a newbie here, is this the right place to ask a question? If not, please forgive me and point me to the right place. I see you used a D300 for this image - what auto-focus settings did you use, and what would you recommend for sharp flight shots (AF-C or S, how many focus points, 3D tracking on or off, etc.?).

    Thank you,

    Richard

    Welcome Richard!

I'm sure Judy Lynn will give you all the details. This is a great place for all to learn ... so this is the right place! If you can't wait, here is also a thread that gives some great tips on how he does BIF (bird in flight):
