Default Green Heron - Biddeford Pool, Maine

Just back from 2 weeks of work in Vermont (in the rain and mud!) Maine has been the same so this AM with some sun showing early I headed for a usual haunt of the local Herons, GBH, BCNH and the Greens. Remembered my muck boots as the trail into the pond had 6 plus inches of H2O on it. Heard this Green calling but took 10 min. to spot it. I was looking in the feed zone on the Lilly Pads since 1st it is rare to have a Green Heron sit in the open for more than a second when it sees me and 2nd I have never seen one perch in the open here in Maine.

Good pose and HA on this beauty! You had the harsh side light against you here. If you could have moved to your right this beauty would be more evenly lit. Like it as is though. Perhaps just tone down the brighter parts of the BG.

I like the head angle and eye contact and would try to lighten the shadows and blur the BG some more. I would also tone down the highlights.

Good pose by the heron, wonderful for it to have given you that opportunity without flying away (we get the same problem up here too). As mentioned the BG is rather distracting as is, and I'm not crazy about the large shadow on the bird. I like your comp...the subject is placed nicely within the frame.

Second everything said above. Nice pose and head turn. Either the heron was quite far from you or the BG was close to the heron or both. Not ideal for bird photography. Considering it's a big crop, I am impressed with the feather details.

Great HA, and lovely light cast on the head. This is sharp too. Just a question - this guy looks more brown to me, so why is he called a green heron. Does he have more green on his back and wings?
