This is Montana Slough south of Revelstoke BC, taken at about 6 AM before the Columbia Mountains Institute Wetlands 2009 Conference started, bumping into other birders (but no bird photogs) near this site, it was a very peaceful but cold morning in early June of this year. This site is not bad for birds, I am pretty sure Bruce has posed at least one shot of an osprey from here, but here is what it looked like looking in the OTHER direction.
Is this too dull? Is there something I should be doing, perhaps sharpening this, or no? I didnt sharpen it at all. Shot with Canon Xsi, f/11 1/200, ISO 200, 24 - 100 at 24 mm...Bruce on two crutches, me on a cane.
Enhanced colors a bit, sharpened, added vignetting, and selectively brightened certain parts of the photo. The resulting image certainly has some of my personal preferences added.
Hi katherine - like desmonds repost - has enhanced the colours and it certainly needed some sharpening.
I think I would crop some from the top to give it more of a pano feel - there is a lot of negative space at the top - a little too much for my personal tastes, considering that there is little of interest up there with no clouds to speak of.
Looking forward to more :)
Hi Katherine,
This is a beautiful capture, the color rendition is superb...agree with Mr. Peters on cropping about 1/4 from the top...love it...good show...
Desmond, thank you for rendering this down a bit further. Its a BIG improvement of a big slough. Lance, I am torn between advice never to put the main line through the centre and your advice, but then maybe you mean to size the entire thing down. And Gus, you are very kind, you know I am new here and any positive words are really well taken. Thank you all.
Desmond has made an improvement on your image. (Having said that, it was a good image to start with) If it were mine, I would get rid of the buildings in the middle.
I know what you mean with the positioning of horizons etc. I do believe however, that you must do what is right in your mind's eye...and sometimes "rules" can be broken. This is hard work Kat; being a newbie. Photographer, PS tech and graphic artist. BIG learning curve for me!
Hi Jennie, thanks for posting. You are right, it takes courage to post here, with all these very expert people here. Thing is they are pretty nice to us. So far.
I see what you mean about the buildings. I hoped they would get passed off as snow! Its funny though i have done that kind of thing, and the very people that like my image and want a copy of it are the ones with the house on the hill there, and they want to know what I have done with it! :)
I maintain I am not a photographer, just an admittedly very long term amateur hobbyist (I am not young!) with a burning desire to learn and do more with my photographs. I have taken photos for work for 30 years. Finally now I can do it for fun, instead. I am looking forward to seeing more of your photos. That lapwing in the yellow clover you posted was a smashing first image, btw.
