Last month I went to Maine to photograph Puffins. The weather kept us off the boat so I went to look at lighthouses. While I was at Cape Neddick Lighthouse, a Herring Gull went fishing directly in front of me. In this frame, the bird was rising up from the ocean to the rocks. The Gull finished off the fish (one gulp) about 30 feet in front of me.
Canon EOS 50D, Canon EF 70-200 f/4 lens, ISO 400, Av Mode, 1/1600 sec shutter speed at f/8, exposure comp: -1/3. The photo was cropped some 40%.
I like it James I find getting these coming at you the most difficult for the camera !! Get more failures than from any other direction ... this is sharp !!
Love the clear view of the fish and bg Bird stands out well form the bg since the bird is on the darker part but do like the white foam for feel !!! btw I would have tried the same shutter speed as you did but find that you get a better looking water with less. The high bg gives it a frozen look !!! I like it a lot Big Congrats !!! ... sorry you could not get to the Island !!
This is a mighty fine capture James...I like the direct perspective and flight angle with the raised wings...well done...looking forward to your next one...
Hi James - Nice - agree with AL's critique - like the action - but do agree the white bird and the white water make it a little difficult to get the bird to pop from the BG.
Keep em coming :)
