Well one parent anyway. I guess the other was out fishing. This is a new chick , probably from the re-nest after the high tide wiped out the colony a few weeks ago. Wish the least terns had as much luck but seems like it's not to be. Also saw 2 Skimmer chicks 1 to 3 days old at best. And yes I would have liked to see the parent's eye but not the best angle to shoot from and no where to move.

You did the best considering the shooting options. The sidelight is a bit strong to my taste and the piece of wood in the BG is distracting. The green stuff overlapping with the primaries is distracting too and a touch of fill flash would do a great job with the shadows.
The most I like in this image is the fantastic moment that you captured in the chick/parent relationship. The pose of the young couldn´t be more tender :-)

I almost forget to say that I like the image ;-)

Juan stole my words, so I'll just agree with what he said. Except for some reason I don't mind the green plant overlapping the primaries - to my eye it balances nicely with all the other green plants. Very cute, hopefully you'll have more chances when the light isn't as harsh.

Excellent critique from Juan. You may try an inverse cure now after the fact, to reduce the contrast, and lightening the parents eye so it is more visible.

    Interaction is priceless :)

Chick pictures are priceless. The BG is, IMHO, somewhat distracting.

The chick basking in the sunlight does it for me. He pose says it all. A tender moment next to mom or dad. The scattered plants around them dont bother me, but the OOF log does distract a bit. Taking a little off the top would help, then cloning in some of the sand BG to get rid of the rest of the log.

The apparently tender moment between parent and chick make this a memorable image, Joe. The log isn't great, too bad it isn't a beautiful piece of driftwood.
