    Default Black Skimmer

Here is another drinking skimmer photographed on Long Island. Too bad the big puddle is gone now. It created great photo opportunities. This is pretty much full frame, just cropped for composition.

    Hey Axel,
Puddle definitely gone......let's hope for some rain/thunderstorms for the next few days! I like the nice light bounce you got off the puddle on the wing undersides. I also like the leading line of the skim and splash just adding to the nice angle. Well done and let's hope for those PM thunderstorms!

Good job on catching the action here Axel! I love that skimming line and splash. Lighting and exposure are great. The reflection is a big plus. Although this is a minor point, I wish you could have been a bit lower so as not to include the white spot on the tail behind the left wing.

Roman nailes the critique, the light reflected really make the underwings stand out.
You did well with the Skimmers, let's hope the Puffs and RB are as nice to you .

Very nice... you definitely get a passing grade on your recent Skimmers.

Another pleasing SKimmer image. I like this very much and I agree with Roman's comments on all accounts. The overall composition is engaging and shows off this bird very well. Thanks for sharing.

This is one bird I would love to photograph but theat is going to entail a long plane journey. I always find birds with there wings outstretch tricky to crop and the pano one here suits it perfectly. Great action, reflection and some lovely light illumuniating the underside of the wings. I can see no fault in a well balanced composition.

    Cheers

Thanks, Rich! If you get a chance to come here, this skimmer colony is only one hour away from the JFK airport in New York.

Love the calm water and the splash. I've never gotten to photograph Skimmers on glassy water; that'd be a real treat! Nice job with the exposure too.

The calm water shows up the wake from the skimmer nicely. Ive been wondering over your recent skimmer images, how large are these puddles, and where are they situated in relation to the surroundings?

Only an hour away from New York, that intersting as my other half wants to take a trip to New York in the near future. I will have to work on my powers of persuasion that she needs to make a bit of detour when we go over.

    Stuart,

The puddle had a diameter of about 50 meters and was in the middle of the beach next to the skimmer colony.

Good luck! If I remember correctly the skimmers leave sometime in early-mid September.

Just love the wing position almost parallel to the flat water. Hope those puddles return.
