    Default Greenbacked Heron

I decided to change this comp before posting. The perch ended two thirds in the frame, so I have cropped the space into the end of the perch. This is my first decent shot of this guy. Taken at a local spot in Pretoria.

Lovely light, BG, pose, and exposure. Tack sharp. I find the comp just a little tight, but I guess it looks better without the end of the perch showing. I wish the the head was angled a few degrees more towards you.

Congratulations on getting this fellow! I agree that cropping was the right thing to do. Good job on the lighting, it shows the texture and colors in the plumage. I only wish for a slightly better head angle but am content as is.

Good composition with good lighting and eye and leg detail. I like the crop on the right but would have liked a little more space above the head.

Great light and posture, the head seems slightly over-sharpened on my monitor. Is it a large crop?

I also agree that it is a little tight and that the head looks a little over sharpened. I love the shades of green outlined by the yellowish tan on the wing feathers. Very nice.

Stuart...loved the pose. As said above, the head angle could have been better. But these guys...they dont move the head a lot once they lock it on to a prey.

I think its a bit noisy. since you had 1/3200, you cud have lowered the iso to 320. 40D/50D at iso800 is quite noisy. Background is uncluttered and seems not too close. You could have stopped it down to f/7.1 or f/8...your lens would have yielded more sharpness. my 2 cents.

Love the composition and the details on this beauty!! Agree a tad over sharpened and I'd tone down the bright spots on the perch. Congrats.

Like the pose & light. Well exposed with good detail & colours. Agree with head angle, but no noise detected at my end? Still well done!

I must clarify. I dont see any noise in BG but see some in the bird. But may be its the oversharpening that I am perceiving as noise?

Super pose and congrats getting your first decent shot. Also think that it's slightly over-sharpened or is this a large crop?

I like the way that the light is shining on his green wing. A bird to spend time more time with to try to implement the above suggestions!

Thank you all so much for the positive feedback. This was not a large crop at all. I can see some noise on the top of the head, but let it down to him being a bit scruffy.

Yeah Stu, a bit less sharpening on the head. Good on you to get him in the open and close. Shy boy'tjie this.

I like the composition, angle and light and unlike the American variety it is not a misnomer. :) Could you have moved to your right for a better head angle?

Stephen, Axel, thanks for the kind words.
Axel, If I moved to my right, there were reeds in my line of sight. This guy is very twitchy, so I shot as quick as I did, before he flew away.

Nice image. I find it nicely sharp and well framed. As I see there is noise on the head and the side of breast due to over-lightening by shadows (probably). Less shadows lightening and more contrast would improve it.

I like the pose and the light,
The perch ended two thirds in the frame
    I would leave like that.
