Default Hermit Thrush in evergreen habitat.

Here is another species that normally gives me lots of trouble getting good photos of (except for an overwintering individual a couple of years winters ago that was sticky close to a suet feeder). This is my first good photograph of this species in a non-snowy habitat - taken at the cottage during my recent vacation. I was sitting in a blind, and audio used to lure it in the open.

    Canon 40D + 100-400L @250mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/60s., f/6.3, ISO 800. -0.3 EC, natural light, handheld, ~85% full-frame (cropped a bit off right and top).

The really thing about the background in this picture is how it's tones recede with distance from the bird, and how it's colors, tones and shapes all enhance the sense of habitat without being so busy that it distracts from the bird. BTW the lighting and posture on the bird are excellent!

Classic. That lens sometimes gives very interesting bokeh.

I totally agree with Doug. This is an excellent pic. Super sharp, great eye contact and I like the dead pine needles around the feet for some reason.

Another good habitat shot of birds I know ,but never see in breeding habitat.
Unfortunate to have a brown tuft at his feet but thats habitat shots.
Background blurs out beautifully even in a habitat shot.
Keep the breeding northern birds coming.

Hi Dan, great comp, and a super forward pose. This is sharp, and love the overall detail on the little guy. Im in two minds to maybe blur the BG a tad more, as the ends of the two needles in front of him draws my eye. Congrats on your first.

Lovely exposure, comp, and I like the habitat included. I am not really fond of the dead pine needles near the feet though.

Samir: The bokeh is like this because it was shot at 250mm.

I believe these birds have the most beautiful call of them all! They are smart too, they will be right next to you and will sing soo softly as if they are far away. This is the habitat I see them in as well and your pose and exposure looks great!

Dan I see that you've got another lovely image from the cottage. Perhaps I can come up for a visit one day.
