Here's a Herring Gull on the Nova Scotia coast yesterday. Self-critique - I have the same problem as I mentioned in Mital Patel's excellent Cormorant posted earlier -i.e. a background line that interferes with the head of the bird, but mine is far more so. But I had the one chance to capture the yawn, so I hope it doesn't detract too much.
Nice yawning pose, exposure, and head turn. If you had lowered your camera a foot or so, the lines intersecting with the head in the BG would not have been a problem. There is a fuzzy area around the breast also, maybe a result of post processing?

Richard,
Great detail in the feathers. A little fill flash would have put a sparkle in the eye and maybe lit the interior of the mouth. Shooting from a lower angle may have put the sky in the background but it you had to shoot quickly, that may not have been an option. I would crop a bit off in front of the subject.
The open beak is the best part. The BG is a bit distracting for me as well as the blur at the neck. Did you use noise reduction? Seems like a lot of the feather detail has been lost.
