Default noise reduction workflow Canon 50D

I remember reading somewhere in this forum about the fact that the Canon software that comes with the camera does a great job of handling the noise in the pictures. I was shooting fireworks on the 4th (anyone not out there :D). I was shooting in raw with ISO 100, but still have nosie in the background from the long exposures and I was wondering if the Canon software would help. And in what order would you process the image? Of course, I'm done with one and want to reduce the BG noise. But we can always start over.

Thanks for any and all help.

Patty, Alfred has been very happy with Topaz Denoise, if you are a Windows user.

Since I'm Mac, I use Noiseware, recommended to me by David Thomasson, very good program.
    Hope this helps!

I don't use the Canon software. I use Noise Ninja. I also use masks with it as well as all standard noise reduction reduces detail. I use heavier noise reduction where I don't care about detail and less in more important detail areas.

Patti, it would help if we could see a 100% crop slice for evaluation.
This may be correctable without NR

Is there a way to post a photo here or do I have to post on another forum and reference it?

There is also a Mac version of Topaz Denoise. I started using after reading Alfred's comments and am also very happy with.

I have been using Noiseware recommended to me by Andy Rouse, British Pro Photographer Extraordinaire. I am very happy with it.

Patty if you join as a paying member for a very low $, you have image upload here up to 200kb
and 1024 px wide. A temp alternative is to load to tinypic.com and post the link in [....].
Or link to any online gallery you may have

Hi Patty, like Robert I normally use Noiseware with PS Elements, but if I have an image that I really want to print I will often use Canons DPP for adjustment AND noise reduction. I find that DPP produces images that I like and for me seems better for controlling JUST noise than most other options, its just a pity that the DPP interface is so 'user hostile' (as opposed to 'user friendly' :) ) that I cannot use it more often.

Patty, have you checked out the noise reduction thread in the educational section? You can find it here: http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ad.php?t=23825

Not sure if I'm replying right, but here we go. I remember a long time ago trying to use DPP - user friendly will never be a term associated with the program. :D I guess I was trying to find out if anyone was having any luck with it before I tax that one last brain cell that remains.

Thank you - I think this is part of what I was searching for. Of course, 57 directions and threads later I'm back. The one thing is they keep talking about noise in the background. This is a long exposure at a lower ISO so there is noise through the whole thing. I think I'm going to try to post photo in another area where photos can be posted and let the fur fly so to speak. If I can get it on another forum, I will post back here so you can see what I'm talking about.

Thanks to everyone for your help.
