Taken in Ireland. After two days taking flightshots of Gannets I wanted to try something else, this gannet was letting everybody know it was about to fly off, but it never did.....:D it just kept showing its elegant sort of dance. After a few shots with the entire gannet showing its behavior I wanted to show the elegance of the bird in close up. The sky was getting densely clouded so I went for some underexposure of the sky and FF the Gannet. I think this shot comes close to what I was going for.
Hope you like it,

Love the SH and the elegance. And the black slash on the far wing. And the detail in the whites, and the perfect EXP. Ain't it great when it works?

I do like it! A lot! Very elegant pose, exposure is dead on with nicely filled underwing details and gorgeous whites. Chroma noise is not too noticeable for me and easily fixed.
I like the image a lot. A wild guess, did you make this image on Great Saltee Island? Great saltee is a wonderful place and I had the time of my life there back in 06.
Underexposed sky, maybe, but who cares... the bird is safe. The best moment for me is that image is nicely extending from the frame and doesn't feel "cropped".
Krijn I see some chroma noise in the Bg but that it is very easy to fix. the image is fantastic, I love the composition and the exposure job. very, very good job :-)
It makes me sigh seeing this photo as I was supposed to be going out to gannet colony at Bass Rock today and it was cancelled due to the weather. You have handled the exposure very well but as previously indicated there is noise in the background which should clean up easily enough. I find the 50D to be very noisey and it is rare that I do not need to apply some noise reduction to the image.
