Interesting plumage, if you wouldn't have said that you made the image in CA, I would have thought it is an American Oystercatcher, not a Black OC.

I remember your other image of this guy Doug. Pin sharp detail, and love that golden eye. Good control on the whites, and overall, thanks for sharing this beauty.

Pretty neat specimen Doug. Good exposure, and I like the included oysters along the bottom edge - nice touch.

I live in OC but I've never seen this plumage before. What a neat find, Doug. Phographically, not sure if I would have done anything differently. The inclusion of the oyster shells along the bottom edge is a very nice touch. The seemingly 'hot' whites don't bother me one bit. I like the comp. as-is. It was nice to meet you at BC the other day. Enjoy your visit and have fun! :)

Note: American Oystercatcher does occur in So Cal.... This bird has a very round pupil for an oystercatcher.

This one was with a Black Oystercatcher. If not an Oystercatcher, what do you think it is Artie?

I don't have a clue of what species this could be but certainly looks like a rare OC. Great find and love the eye and bill. Not too sure about the BG.

I don't know about the pupil but this guy has a classic OC bill and head shape, IMO. American Oystercatcher is very uncommon in Ca, but it is possible.

I looked at my Black Oystercatcher images from our trip and their pupils appear to be identical to this one.

Do not know. The head pattern is certainly suggestive of AMOY. I am pretty sure that they were considered conspecific at one time.... That said, I looked closely at my photo of BLOY and AMOY and the former seems to have a thicker tip to the upper mandible as does the bird in your image.

Is this the same bird as your whole body image?
