In April we wee in New Mexico, and I went to Bosque del Apache early in the morning of April 12. I started at the place we had seen many egrets nesting the previous evening, and this was the first picture I took. Canon xSi and Tamron 18-270 at 18mm, 1/25 sec, f3.5.
Despite following the Art's directions as closely as possible, this picture lost a lot of sharpness and quality in compression for the web. I would appreciate suggestions about that as well as comments about the image itself.
Thank you all for your comments and help. I think I've managed to compress better. I'm Using Photoshop Elements, which is a little different from Photoshop.
I am reposting the picture in what I hope is a better compression.
The metering was Center Weighted Average with no adjustment, ISO640. I boosted exposure .20 in PSE, and lightened the shadows by 3.
I am posting a second image that I took at the same time as the other one. I liked it better except that the moon was right at the top edge of the image, and the camera was not level. By the time I straightened the image, the moon was cut out, but I think I still like it better. I don't know if it's kosher to post 2 versions of the same shot, but after Alfred's comment about composition I thought I'd go ahead.
EXIF info is very similar, CWAvg with no correction, boosted .20 in PSE. 1/13 second at f3.5, ISO800. Shadows lightened 2 in PSE.
